This book is about both the phenomena that the eye draws out of need, and the reality that the eye does not register. It seems in most short story collections, there are ones that speak to me more clearly than others, and this is the case here. However the enchantment of the book conitnues throughout the entire work. This book requires a suspension of that horizon of reality and the ephermal - that which may be too gossamer to be seen in the usual sense. Having given the bossy, rational self over to the experience of the non-physical taking form that can be sensed, these stories are quite transportive. One of my favorites is the first story, the one I often see cited by reviews. Several grandmothers find themselves on a ship with no memory or knowledge of how they came to be there. Some of them make small talk and some take assertive steps to find a solution. I love that they are always called the grandmothers, and I love Alice, the one who submerges herself in the experience. Early one she suspects she has died.
Another deep favorite is the last story in which people grow love arms. When they love someone, an arm grows. It cannot be willed. It will not respond to lust. Young girls dream of their love arms. The iterations and combinations of a love being on clear display are stunning.
And then I find I really liked the story where a consortium of well known academics gather to hear from a Nobel Laureate who does not come. So the evening starts with each one speaking to their own obsessions and evolves to the point that people add their personal obsessions. Our hero, who has lost his wife ponders the most difficult questions of grief, but not out loud. "Is it braver to allow the sadness of your leaving to spread into each of my bones until it is as big as you were to me? Or it it braver to let you drift out nto what may very well be a brighter, finer place than this and happy to think of your joy there?"
This is the "it" book of the literary journals right now, and they are often a drag. But this book is entitled to its place of admiration and well worth reading. Just let some of your rational mind rest for a while and wander where the spirit may be seen.

These stories indicate a very unusual take on life, but somehow quite familiar. Ideas that many of us ponder but seldom verbalize or mention at all are expressed in the stories, as though the characters are perfectly average people. Category O is a designation that the Canadian border Mounties give to odd or unusual people wanting to enter Canada. If one is considered Category O, the Mounties detain and question you.
Ausubel's collection moves a mysterious chord. Characters and situations thoroughly engage and captivate. Ausubel's stories linger for a long while and haunt the reader. Although the stories don't flutter and flower like the cover, readers will likely think long and hard about what Ausubel has accomplished.
These stories were beautifully written as well as thought provoking and at times heartbreaking. Ausubel has an amazing talent for beautiful poetic prose and these stories show it. A lot of magical realism stories I've read have very original and interesting premises without much great writing. This collection has both original, interesting premises with great writing. Nothing in this book is forgettable. Definitely a good read.
As the title might suggest, this collection explores the boundaries between life and death. If you're like me, you can only take so many heavy themes at once before getting overwhelmed. However, Ausubel writes these stories in such an understated way that the reader stays grounded in what's happening, and is not overwhelmed with the emotional stakes until after they've had time for consideration. If I had to pick a word to describe A Guide to Being Born, it would be 'thoughtful'. These stories definitely stay with you long after you've read them. "Poppyseeds" was one of my favorites.
Love love love this book! So many great short stories and a pretty fast read. I'm a bit of a slow reader, so you might take a while if you're like me. I ended up buying this because two friends talked it up and I was not disappointed! Bought another title by Ramona and can't wait to start it.
These stories spin around in ribbons of strangeness that somehow show the realities of life better than real life can. You may not have experienced the circumstances as they are described, but you've experienced the emotions, honest and heartbreaking.
I'm certain the characters Ausubel has crafted exist somewhere, trying their best to make sense of life. You won't forget these characters. You won't forget these stories.
Ausubel's writing is incredibly imaginative and full of evocative characters and imagery. Some of the stories were a bit hit and miss for me, but the overall aesthetic she's built in this collections stands up alongside other greats such as Aimee Bender or Karen Russell. These are stories built lovingly, full of heart and heartbreak, and they're worth grappling with.
