As I have noted in previous reviews, Jonathan Kellerman is probably my favorite living author, and I look forward to every new book that he writes. I never thought I would have difficulty getting interested in one, but in this case I did. The story involves a custody dispute between two sisters--a free-spirited flower child who was the mother of a year-old daughter and a wealthy research doctor who wanted to raise the child and believed her sister was an unfit parent. Alex Delaware was asked to submit an evaluation to the court. Roughly the first third of the book deals with endless interviews with participants in the lawsuit, and it does not make the exciting reading that I expect from Jonathan Kellerman. It wasn't until page 119 that someone got killed, and then the story became the murder mystery that I do expect. In the last two-thirds of the book, I was eagerly turning pages and enjoying the plot twists but it took a long time to get there. I'm giving the book four stars because of the last 200-plus pages and because for me any Kellerman mystery deserves more than three. But this is definitely not his best work. If you've never read any of his books, for heaven's sakes, don't start with this one.

I will begin by saying that I've read Kellerman since he wrote the very first Alex Delaware novel and consider myself a fan of the series. I've loved Alex and Milo and the sick and twisted plotlines over the years ("Monster" comes to mind). I look forward to the publication date of each book, but have sometimes been disappointed.

"Killer" started out really strong and then seemed to stay in the same place for a long time. He spent so much time engaging the reader in the beginning that I think he ran out of ideas with where to take the characters towards the middle, giving up with an ending that came out of left field and was disconnected to the rest of the story.

I realize when an author writes this many books in a series they can't all be winners. And while I didn't find this particular book to be terrible, I did find it one of his weaker works. It seemed like a filler written more to fulfill his publishing contract than a book published to truly satisfy the longtime readers of the series..
The usual suspects -- Alex, Robin and Milo -- turn up "Killer" with results that meet expectations. Delaware himself becomes a target for one woman, Connie, locked in a custody fight with the mother of the child in question, interestingly named Rambla. So many possible leads for Milo, including members of a band in which the mother sings. And just who is the father of the child? Is he a suspect when Connie is found dead and the mother and child have disappeared? Not my favorite Delaware book, but certainly worth the read.
I was disappointed in Mr. Kellerman's latest book. In the first place, the two sisters were unbelievable characters. One was so evil, the other a Madonna, nothing less than annoying. Delaware worships her goodness. I wondered how she supported herself, how she was deemed such a great mother after deserting her child for so long to travel with a rock band, and how she turned into an exceptional mother after leading such a loose, unconnected life, with no visible way of earning a living. Having said that, the story wanders all over the place, ending with a solution that was absurd. Minor characters suddenly leaped into the forefront, with everything else in the story nothing but red herrings. It was not an "Oh, MY!" ending, with a "Why didn't I think of that" response. It appeared to be thrown in because Kellerman did not want to implicate any of the other characters. Milo, my favorite character, was not used to satisfaction. Kellerman is better than this, with great psychological insight and a wonderful interaction between Milo and Alex. Don't waste your money. Wait for the next one.
I will state upfront that I am a fan of Jonathan Kellerman's novels and always look forward to the release of his latest. However, if you have never read one of his novels, don't start with this one. I don't feel this was his best effort. I thought it started out slow with a lot of introspective narrative on the part of Alex Delaware. There was also a lot of explanation about the characters histories...Alex's house burning, Milo's sexual preferences, etc. These passages felt awkward and I wondered why the information wasn't woven into the narrative more skillfully. I found myself thinking this didn't even feel like Jonathan Kellerman's writing. Also, there were several different storyline 'threads' and uncharacteristically, it never felt as if they were woven together. The resolution of the main conflict was puzzling. It felt as if the solution was plucked out of thin air. Yes, I was disappointed with this latest novel of Mr. Kellerman's. Will I buy his next release? Yes...because I know how good his novels can be.
Years ago I read the early Alex Delaware books and enjoyed them. But now, they are just unreasonable in my opinion. Regardless of how non-traditional a police detective is, I cannot for the life of me see him saying "Hmmm....a murder was just reported, I think I'll stop on the way and pick up my pal, the therapist", and this happens EVERY TIME! Really? Just too silly for me and in the end, I didn't finish the book. I don't mind at all suspending my disbelief, but I can't destroy it all together. Not for me.
